Petition for the Restoration of Boulder City's Historic Landmark

As residents deeply invested in the legacy and aesthetic integrity of Boulder City, we passionately and emphatically raise our voices to condemn the current iteration of the land surrounding our most cherished landmark - the Bureau of Reclamation building.

For almost a century, the Reclamation building has stood as the cornerstone of our city, a testament to our heritage and resilience. Per the Boulder City *"Historic District Report" of 2012, this structure holds a pivotal place in our community, not only as the most significant governmental edifice but also as a beacon of our past, erected during the construction of the dam in 1932.

However, recent alterations to its surroundings have cast a shadow over its grandeur. Spearheaded by federal agencies, the initiative to replace the lawn that has been a feature of the front of the main office building for decades and replace it with a newly designed water smart design aimed at conservation, while noble in intention, has resulted in an eyesore that obscures our beloved landmark from every angle. Gone are the lush green lawns and majestic trees that once graced the landscape. What was once a verdant expanse now resembles a garbage dump (landfill) that has been infilled with dirt and rocks, devoid of the charm that once defined our cityscape.

What exacerbates our dismay is the lack of city and community involvement in the design evolution process. Despite the project's purported benefits, residents were excluded from crucial discussions and denied the opportunity to voice their concerns or offer design alternatives, as the original concept had changed. The discrepancy between the presented renderings and the executed reality only compounds our frustration, leaving us disillusioned, disenchanted and extremely angry.

The consequences of this ill-conceived endeavor extend beyond its breathtakingly poor aesthetics; it devalues any of the surrounding properties that face the Reclamation building, depriving homeowners of the picturesque vistas they once enjoyed and paid for. The ripple effect of this offensive vision transcends visual horror and destroys the heritage nature of the site itself.

Our attachment to our most historic and beloved landmark is multigenerational, binding us in a collective reverence for its significance. Whether newcomers or descendants of the original families that built the dam, we share a common sentiment of pride, admiration and love for the Reclamation building. Its symbolic importance cannot be overstated; it is the beating heart of Boulder City, a testament to our past, present, and future.

Thus, we implore the relevant authorities to heed our plea for remedial action. This petition declares our unwavering commitment to preserving our heritage and reclaiming the beauty that defines our beloved city. Together, let us ensure that the Reclamation building stands tall and proud, a beacon of our collective history and identity for generations to come.

BOR, we beg of you, PLEASE restore the historic nature of this city’s most important and cherished landmark and give us something that we can once again be proud of.

Signed,
Boulder City Residents
